Backpacking on the Appalachian Trail’s Sinking Creek Mountain

Life on the trail can be a mixed bag of challenges and awe-inspiring experiences. You never know what you’re going to get! This Mountain Shepherd adventure on the Appalachian Trail will prepare you with your own mixed bag of basic backpacking and safety skills, so you can explore with confidence in the face of both excitement and obstacles!

“Trail Mix for Women”: This adventure is designed for and facilitated by only women for a refreshing, empowering experience! Trail Mix for Women is the perfect opportunity to try out backpacking with other strong, adventurous ladies.

Trail Mix for Women features an introduction to the seven survival priorities (positive mental attitude, wilderness first aid, shelter, fire, signaling, water, and food) followed by a 2.5-day, 2-night backpacking trip on the Sinking Creek Mountain section of the Appalachian Trail. Trip preparation happens on day one at Mountain Shepherd and includes a review of the survival priorities and an introduction to the basics of backpacking, from finding water and cooking to using hiking poles and fitting your pack. This backpacking and camping adventure will allow you to discover new friendships, develop new skills, and create your own Trail Mix of safety, empowerment, and excitement so that you can tackle the challenges of the trail with confidence!

Have no fear, we’ve got all the gear! You do not need to purchase or bring any of your own gear other than footwear and clothing. Meals and snacks are provided on-trail and at Mountain Shepherd Adventure School, with dietary accommodations made when necessary. Click here for a list of provided gear and a recommended packing list.

This experience begins on Thursday and wraps up on Sunday afternoon. The group departs from Mountain Shepherd Adventure School on foot Friday morning, hiking to Sarver Hollow Shelter to camp Friday night, and to Niday Shelter on Saturday. Transportation is provided from the end of the trail at Rt. 621 back to Mountain Shepherd, where your vehicle will stay safely parked during the hike.

*It is important to note that this trek covers approximately 12 miles of the Appalachian Trail and its side trails, much of which is steep, rocky terrain. Each day of hiking features elevation change in the form of challenging uphill climbs and tricky downhill descents. This Mountain Shepherd adventure is ideal for participants who have some backpacking experience or, at minimum, significant day-hiking experience over very difficult terrain.
